Federal Charges in Riverside & San Bernardino
What is a Federal Crime?
A federal crime is a criminal act that is considered illegal according to U.S. federal legislation, or a criminal act that occurs on federal property. Federal crimes may violate both state and federal laws, and they are investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration, Customs and Border Protection, Internal Revenue Service, Postal Service, or Immigration and Naturalization Service.
There are many types of federal crimes, which include sex crimes, violent crimes, drug crimes, and white collar crimes. The U.S. Attorney’s Office works with federal and state law enforcement to determine which federal crimes will be brought to federal court. If a crime is brought to federal court, the crime and the offender will be evaluated by the federal grand jury, which consists of 23 jurors. The grand jury reviews documents, listens to witness testimonies, and returns indictments. The jury must find probable cause before they are allowed to believe the offender committed the crime in question. All grand jury proceedings are kept top secret.
If a person is convicted of a federal crime, they may face penalties such as incarceration, monetary fines, probation, and community service.
